Dorji Wangdi after being welcomed at Jaigaon by CONNECTING NATIONS

Sometimes a sensible & responsible citizen can play an important role of “Citizen Ambassador”.

Recently on 1st March, Raju Nepali, founder of anti-human trafficking NGO based out of North-Bengal & Sikkim ;  Bhutanese authorities from the Ministry of Home & Cultural Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan and with proper liaison with the members of Connecting Nations, a media house based at Jaigaon successfully managed to rescue Dorji Wangdi, 62 a mentally challenged Bhutanese citizen back to his home country, Bhutan.

As per Raju Nepali, founder of DE NGO, “since 2016, Dorji was seen loitering between Malbazaar, Salugara, Kalimpong, Mangpo & Darjeeling. He even survived twice from elephant attacks.”

“To my dismay, despite improper food habits and poor nutrition, Dorji was seen energetic and chanting some religious mantras. He didn’t Beg” Added Raju from DE.

The video of DE founder along with Dorji started flooding on social media platforms on 27-28th February 2022. After Dorji was recognized as Bhutanese citizen, Connecting Nations immediately reached and coordinated Raju Nepali, DE NGO founder. Immediately Bhutanese authorities were reached & informed.

Members of DE NGO with Dorji Wangdi after arriving Jaigaon

Tashi Penjore, Director Law & Order, RGoB along with Jigme Singye, a senior ADM serving with Phuentsholing Dunkhag (District Administration) assured all expenses and cooperation to rescue Dorji back to Bhutan. Within less than 24 hours on 1st march 2022, team Duars Expressmail & members of Connecting Nations managed to bring Dorji Wangdi at IB (main gate), Jaigaon. Meanwhile SSB based at Jaigaon were informed at gate. RBP, Immigration & other officials based at Phuentsholing equally cooperated in the process.

As reported by Rajesh Rai in Kuensel; Dorji Wangdi, 62 originally hail from Lhuentse in Bhutan is a monk.

Sangay Wangmo from Khoma, a relative of Dorji Wangdi said that “He was a monk before and even stayed as a tshampa. He became mentally unsound later. He is not married and doesn’t have children.”

She said it has been two years since Dorji Wangdi started his wandering. He used to come and stay for a few times at home, about a month or more, before wandering off again. She said officials called her yesterday. “They said they will send him here once the quarantine period is over. But there is no guarantee he will live with us as he keeps wandering off.”

On 1st March 2022 at around 10:50 am, Dorji Wangdi stepped inside Bhutan.

Everyone involved and associated in this process truly depicts a warm gesture of humanity.
