India and Bhutan: Building a Special Railway Connection
India and Bhutan are on the brink of realizing a historic milestone in their bilateral relations as plans for a transformative railway connection gather momentum. This visionary project, fully funded by the Indian government with an estimated cost of ₹10 billion, will span 57.5 kilometers, connecting Kokrajhar in Assam, India, to Gelephu in Sarpang, Bhutan. The anticipated completion date for this groundbreaking infrastructure project is set for 2026.
This ambitious endeavor represents a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and cooperation between the two neighboring nations. It is expected to have far-reaching implications, not only for trade and tourism but also for strengthening cultural exchange and bilateral ties.
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, revealed that discussions surrounding this transformative railway connection have been underway. He emphasized Bhutan’s keen interest in expanding tourism opportunities and highlighted the potential benefits for Assam. The proposed railway link between Gelephu and Kokrajhar, situated on the Assam border, is poised to be a game-changer, fostering both trade and tourism.
As India and Bhutan look ahead to the project’s completion, it is clear that the railway infrastructure will act as a catalyst for facilitating the export of goods, enabling greater cultural exchange, and cementing stronger bilateral relations between the two nations.
This visionary railway project gained momentum during the Bhutanese Prime Minister’s first official visit to India in 2018. The commencement of the Gelephu-Kokrajhar rail link construction is expected to open the doors for more railway projects in the southern and eastern regions of both nations. This expansion will encompass areas such as Samtse, Phuentsholing, Nganglam, and Samdrupjongkhar, promising enhanced connectivity and economic opportunities for the region’s residents.
Notably, the commitment to this transformative vision was formalized back in 2005 when Bhutan and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement solidified their shared aspiration to connect the bordering towns of the two nations through an extensive railway network, a testament to their enduring friendship and commitment to mutual progress.
As the wheels of progress turn, this historic Bhutan-India railway link inches closer to becoming a reality, heralding a new era of connectivity and cooperation. India, as Bhutan’s largest trading partner, sharing a 605-kilometer (376-mile) border with the nation, is poised to play a pivotal role in Bhutan’s continued development, with this railway link serving as a tangible symbol of their deepening ties. The Government of India’s substantial allotment of ₹120 billion for the extensive expansion and modernization of railway infrastructure in the northeastern region of the country further underscores the significance of this eagerly awaited Bhutan-India railway connection.
