Big diplomatic victory for India: Qatar frees eight ex-Navy veterans jailed on espionage charges
In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Qatar has released eight veterans of the Indian Navy who were sentenced to death on espionage charges, with seven of them now safely back in India. The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed this development through an official statement on Monday, highlighting the successful efforts made by the Indian government in securing their release.
The released Indian Navy veterans, who had faced severe charges of espionage, returned to India after their capital punishment was commuted to extended prison terms, following relentless diplomatic interventions by New Delhi. This turn of events marks a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between India and Qatar, signifying a positive outcome after months of arduous negotiations and efforts.
Expressing their gratitude towards the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their safe return, one of the Navy veterans stated, “We are very happy that we are back in India, safely. Definitely, we would like to thank PM Modi, as this was only possible because of his personal intervention.”
Another released Indian Navy veteran echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the pivotal role played by Prime Minister Modi and the continuous efforts of the Government of India in facilitating their return. “We waited almost for 18 months to be back in India. We are extremely grateful to the PM. It wouldn’t have been possible without his personal intervention and his equation with Qatar,” the veteran expressed, expressing heartfelt gratitude towards the government.
The Union government, in an official statement, welcomed the decision to set the veteran officers free, acknowledging the Amir of the State of Qatar’s role in enabling their release and homecoming. “The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for the Dahra Global company who were detained in Qatar. Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India,” the statement read, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two nations.
The eight Indian nationals, who were detained since October 2022 on allegations of spying on a submarine program, had faced a tumultuous legal battle in Qatar. Initially, they were handed death sentences by Qatar’s Court of First Instance on October 26, which were later reduced to jail terms, showcasing the evolving nature of their legal proceedings.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the COP28 summit in Dubai played a crucial role in advancing discussions on bilateral partnership and addressing the well-being of the Indian community residing in Qatar.
The Ministry of External Affairs underscored the confidentiality of the court order detailing the commutation of the death sentences to imprisonment terms, emphasizing the meticulous legal procedures followed in ensuring the veterans’ safe return.
The release of the Indian Navy veterans from Qatar marks a significant triumph for diplomatic efforts, underscoring the importance of bilateral cooperation and the protection of Indian nationals abroad.
