Thrice Upon a Time: Modi’s Third Bhutan Journey Set to Begin After Talks
PM Modi to Visit Bhutan Following Talks with Bhutanese Counterpart
In a testament to the enduring bond between India and Bhutan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a visit to Bhutan next week, as announced by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay after their recent meeting in Delhi. The rendezvous between the two leaders, held on March 14, Thursday night, underscored the robust partnership shared by the neighboring nations.
During his current 5-day sojourn in India, Prime Minister Tobgay, who assumed office in January this year, is engaged in discussions aimed at fortifying bilateral relations. This diplomatic engagement is his maiden international tour since assuming office.
Although no formal press statement was issued post the meeting, Prime Minister Modi took to social media to express the productivity of their deliberations, encompassing various facets of the unique bond shared between India and Bhutan. Gratefully acknowledging the invitation extended by the King of Bhutan and Prime Minister Tobgay, Modi confirmed his forthcoming visit to Bhutan next week.

The significance of this announcement extends beyond diplomatic pleasantries. With both Prime Ministers engaging in back-to-back visits, speculation arises regarding the impending announcement of general election dates. As per the model code of conduct, major policy decisions are prohibited post the declaration of election dates, potentially affecting the agenda of Modi’s visit to Bhutan if election dates are announced before his departure.
In their discussions, issues of bilateral trade, investment in infrastructure projects, and Bhutan’s ambitious plans for the “Gelephu Mindfulness City” were tabled. Additionally, matters concerning boundary demarcation with China and Bhutanese strategies on the issue were deliberated upon, highlighting the strategic nature of their dialogue.
Ahead of Tobgay’s visit to Delhi, the Indian Cabinet cleared agreements focusing on energy conservation and food safety, indicating the tangible outcomes of the diplomatic discourse between the two nations.
On March 13, The Ministry of External Affairs of India, through a press note, highlighted the depth of the bilateral relationship, emphasizing the commitment to strengthen the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan.
As anticipation builds for Modi’s imminent visit to Bhutan, it symbolizes not only the cordiality between the two nations but also the strategic depth of their partnership in fostering regional stability and prosperity.
