A fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela site on Wednesday morning, just a day after two LPG cylinder explosions caused a massive blaze in Sector 19. The latest incident occurred in the kitchen area of the Ram Das Ashram in Sector 5 as preparations for frying puris were underway. Though the fire was quickly contained with no reported casualties, the back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over safety measures at the world’s largest religious gathering.
Incident Details and Emergency Response
The fire erupted in the early hours of Wednesday in the kitchen of the Ram Das Ashram, situated in Sector 5 of the Mela grounds. Firefighters promptly reached the site and managed to douse the flames before they could spread further. While there were no injuries or fatalities, authorities are assessing the extent of property damage.
This incident follows a significant fire in Sector 19 on Tuesday, triggered by an LPG cylinder explosion. The blaze engulfed several tents, causing substantial damage, though no casualties were reported. Authorities have since launched an investigation into both incidents and are reviewing fire safety protocols across the Mela site.
Authorities Review Fire Safety Measures
The Maha Kumbh Mela administration has assured the public that safety protocols will be reinforced to prevent future mishaps. The festival, which has already drawn over 77.2 million devotees, continues to operate under heightened vigilance.
Prayagraj Fire Chief Avinash Chandra stated, “The Maha Kumbh Mela is equipped with 53 fire stations and over 1,300 fire personnel stationed across the site. Our response time remains under three minutes. We are constantly monitoring fire-prone areas and ensuring safety measures are in place.”
Impact on Pilgrims and Security Measures
Despite the fire incidents, the Kumbh Mela remains undeterred, with massive crowds continuing to arrive. The next major bathing ritual, Mauni Amavasya, scheduled for January 29, is expected to see an even larger turnout.
Authorities are working to ensure that safety measures remain stringent. They have advised kitchen operators to strictly follow fire safety guidelines, particularly concerning LPG usage. Camps affected by the fires have been inspected, and additional safety drills are being conducted.
“We urge all devotees and camp organizers to report any potential fire hazards immediately. Our teams are on high alert,” a senior Mela official stated.

The Sector 19 fire was reportedly caused by a gas leak from a small cylinder in the Geeta Press camp kitchen. The Sector 5 fire is under investigation, though initial reports suggest it may have been linked to cooking activities.
Authorities have taken preventive measures, including the removal of gas cylinders from high-risk zones and increased surveillance across the Mela site.
While the recent fire incidents have raised alarms, the Kumbh Mela administration is actively reinforcing fire safety measures. With millions of pilgrims still expected to arrive, ensuring the safety of all attendees remains a top priority. The 45-day event, running until February 26, will continue with enhanced security and fire prevention strategies to prevent further mishaps.
