West Bengal a ‘Powerhouse of Growth and Opportunity’: Mamata Banerjee After Business Summit
Kolkata, February 7, 2025 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has declared the state a “powerhouse of growth and opportunity,” highlighting major economic progress and investments following the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025. She announced that 1.72 crore people have been lifted out of poverty, emphasizing the state’s transformation under her leadership.
The two-day BGBS 2025, which concluded on Thursday, attracted 212 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and Letters of Intent, with investment proposals totaling ₹4,40,595 crore, Banerjee revealed. She credited the government’s policies for making Bengal a preferred investment destination.
Reflecting on the state’s growth, Banerjee took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Yesterday, as I stood at the Bengal Global Business Summit, surrounded by policymakers, corporate leaders, entrepreneurs, and global visionaries, I saw a dream unfolding before my eyes. Bengal has emerged as a leader in growth and opportunity, bringing 1.72 crore people out of poverty.”
She reaffirmed her commitment to Bengal’s economic development, recalling her promise upon taking office in 2011 to transform the state into a hub of industry and prosperity.
Quoting renowned social reformer Gopal Krishna Gokhale, she reiterated, “My mission was clear: to build a Bengal where every resident could proudly say, ‘What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow.’”
Banerjee highlighted significant industrial projects contributing to the state’s economic success. She pointed to the coal extraction project at Deocha Pachami in Birbhum as a game-changer for Bengal’s energy sector. This project is expected to unlock vast coal reserves and fuel industrial expansion in the coming years.
Additionally, she emphasized ongoing oil exploration at Ashoknagar, which she believes will strengthen Bengal’s position in India’s petroleum industry. These projects, she noted, are milestones in Bengal’s journey toward self-reliance and industrial leadership.
“The dream of ‘Biswa Bangla’—a Bengal that leads by example, is future-ready, and speaks to the world—is becoming a reality before our eyes,” Banerjee remarked.
West Bengal has consistently attracted investment interest over the years. Since the inception of BGBS, the state has received proposals worth ₹19 lakh crore. Banerjee noted that projects worth ₹13 lakh crore from previous summits have already been successfully implemented.
At the closing session of BGBS 2025, Banerjee reaffirmed Bengal’s commitment to fostering an investor-friendly environment. She stated that the state is now seen as a leader, innovator, and key global partner in economic growth.
With record-breaking investments, strategic industrial initiatives, and poverty alleviation measures, West Bengal is emerging as a major economic hub in India. The success of BGBS 2025 further reinforces the state’s position as a top destination for national and international investors.
As Bengal continues to attract new business opportunities, the government remains focused on sustainable industrial expansion, ensuring that the state’s economic resurgence benefits all sections of society.
