


Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay extended his condolences to India following the devastating landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district, which claimed the lives of over 300 people. Expressing his sorrow on social media platform X, Tshering Tobgay stated, “I am deeply saddened by the devastation caused by #WayanadLandslides in Kerala, India. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire community of Wayanad.”
Many other global leaders also expressed their sympathies over the tragic event. US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden conveyed their heartfelt condolences, saying, “Jill and I extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by the deadly landslides in the state of Kerala in India. Our prayers are with the victims of this tragic event, and we mourn with the families who have lost loved ones. We commend the bravery of the Indian service members and first responders supporting the complex recovery effort. We will continue to hold the people of India in our thoughts during this difficult time,” read an official statement from the White House.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also sent messages of condolence to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu on July 31. The Russian Embassy in India shared Putin’s message on X, which read, “President of #Russia Vladimir Putin sent a condolence message to President of #India Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi over the tragic consequences of the landslides in #Kerala.” Putin expressed his heartfelt condolences and support to India and those affected, wishing for a swift recovery for the injured. “Kindly accept the most sincere condolences over the tragic consequences of the landslides in Kerala. Please convey words of sympathy and support to the near and dear ones of the deceased, as well as wishes for a speedy recovery of all injured,” the post added.
The Iranian Embassy in India also extended its sympathies to the families affected by the Wayanad landslides. “The Embassy of the I.R. Iran in New Delhi extends its deepest sympathies to the Government of the Republic of India and the people of #Kerala who have suffered in #WayanadLandslides. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in this tragic disaster,” the embassy stated on X.
The landslides, triggered by incessant rainfall on July 30, ravaged the hilly areas of Meppadi in Wayanad district. As of Friday, officials reported the death toll at 210, with an additional 134 body parts recovered. The victims included 96 males, 85 females, and 29 children. The number of bodies identified by relatives stands at 146, with post-mortems completed for 207 bodies and 134 body parts. Currently, 84 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts, while 187 have been discharged. In total, 273 individuals have been brought to hospitals from the incident site.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed the tragic death toll of 308 from the multiple landslides that struck Wayanad on July 30.
