India Raises Concerns Over Hindu Attacks in Bangladesh

New Delhi, February 7, 2025 – The Indian government has raised serious concerns in the Lok Sabha over increasing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. According to Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, 23 Hindus have been killed and 152 temples attacked since August 5, 2024. The government is closely monitoring the situation and has taken up the issue with Dhaka.

India’s Diplomatic Response

Speaking in Parliament, Singh highlighted that 76 attacks on Hindus were reported in Bangladesh between November 26, 2024, and January 25, 2025. He stated that the violence has been escalating, targeting Hindu temples and individuals.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri raised the issue during his visit to Dhaka on December 9, 2024, emphasizing India’s expectations for the protection of minority communities. Following this, the Bangladesh government announced the arrest of 70 individuals and registered 88 cases related to the attacks. Police investigations have confirmed 1,254 incidents of violence against minorities.

“The Indian High Commission in Dhaka is closely monitoring the situation,” Singh assured, reiterating that the security of all citizens, including minorities, remains the responsibility of the Bangladesh government.

Political Turmoil and Border Tensions

The surge in violence coincides with political instability in Bangladesh. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country on August 5, 2024, amid a crisis, and a caretaker government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has since taken charge.

Fearing persecution, thousands of minority community members have attempted to cross into India since August. Additionally, border tensions have risen due to disagreements over construction projects previously approved by Hasina’s administration. These issues have further strained India-Bangladesh relations.

India has taken a firm stance, urging Bangladesh to ensure the safety of its Hindu population. While law enforcement efforts have led to arrests, concerns remain over ongoing targeted attacks. With political uncertainty persisting in Bangladesh, India’s diplomatic efforts in the coming months will be critical in addressing the situation and protecting the Hindu minority.
