India Calls Trump’s USAID Allegations “Deeply Troubling,” Seeks Clarification

New Delhi, February 21, 2025 – The Indian government has expressed serious concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent claim that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) allocated $21 million to influence India’s elections. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has called the accusations “deeply troubling” and is seeking further clarification from the U.S.

Trump’s Allegations

Speaking at an event in Miami, President Trump questioned why the U.S. spent $21 million on voter turnout in India. He stated:

“Why do we need to spend $21 million for voter turnout in India? Wow, $21 million! I guess they were trying to get somebody else elected.”

He further suggested that this money might have been part of a “kickback scheme,” implying that funds were redirected for improper use.

India’s Response

Reacting to Trump’s statements, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the Indian government is investigating the matter. He stated:

“We have seen the information released by the U.S. administration regarding certain USAID activities and funding. These reports are deeply troubling. There are concerns about foreign interference in India’s internal affairs.”

The Indian government has assured that relevant agencies are looking into the claims and will share updates when appropriate.

Political Reactions in India

Trump’s remarks have sparked political controversy within India. Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress Party have reacted strongly:

  • BJP’s Stand: Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell head, alleged that the $21 million was used to support groups that influence Indian politics. He questioned who benefited from these funds.
  • Congress’ Response: Congress leader Pawan Khera criticized the Modi government, asking how such foreign funding was allowed under its watch. He demanded full transparency on USAID’s financial activities in India.

Was the Money for India or Bangladesh?

Reports suggest that the $21 million was originally allocated for Bangladesh in 2022, not India. The funds were meant for civic engagement programs before Bangladesh’s January 2024 elections. However, over $13.4 million was spent before the program was canceled by the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.

Concerns Over Foreign Interference

The allegations raise concerns about foreign influence in India’s democracy. While the U.S. has used USAID to promote democracy worldwide, Trump’s claim suggests a possible overreach. India, which follows a strict non-interference policy, is taking these accusations seriously, especially with the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Next Steps

  • The Indian government will continue investigating any foreign financial influence.
  • Diplomatic talks between India and the U.S. may address the issue.
  • Political parties will likely use this controversy in their election campaigns.
  • USAID and U.S. officials may provide further clarification on the funding allocations.

As India seeks answers, the controversy over potential election interference is far from settled.
