India-France Ties Strengthen as PM Modi, President Macron Inaugurate Indian Consulate in Marseille

Marseille, France – February 12, 2025 – In a significant step toward strengthening India-France diplomatic relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron jointly inaugurated the Indian Consulate in Marseille on Wednesday. The move highlights India’s expanding global presence and reinforces the deep-rooted strategic partnership between the two nations.

A Historic Diplomatic Milestone

During the inauguration, PM Modi emphasized Marseille’s historical ties with India, noting its role in India’s freedom struggle and World War I. “This vibrant city was a crucial base for Indian troops during the war and holds a special place in our history, particularly linked to the efforts of Veer Savarkar,” he remarked.

The new consulate, first announced during Modi’s visit to France in July 2023, will oversee four key administrative regions in southern France: Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Corsica, Occitanie, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. These regions play a crucial role in trade, industry, energy, and luxury tourism, making the consulate a vital hub for fostering economic and cultural ties.

Honoring the Shared Past

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and President Macron paid tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars at the Mazargues War Cemetery. The cemetery, managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, commemorates over 990 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during World War I.

“At Mazargues War Cemetery, we paid tribute to the brave souls who embodied valor and sacrifice. Their courage in distant lands and unwavering duty to a greater cause will forever be remembered,” PM Modi stated.

President Macron acknowledged the significant contributions of Indian soldiers, recalling that over 100,000 Indians fought for France in 1914, with nearly 10,000 never returning. “Their sacrifice binds France and India forever,” Macron said.

Expanding Strategic and Economic Ties

The inauguration of the consulate is a part of broader efforts to strengthen the India-France Strategic Partnership. PM Modi and President Macron also visited the control room of CMA-CGM, a French shipping and logistics firm, to explore collaborations under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

PM Modi highlighted the consulate’s role as a vital bridge between the two nations. “This consulate will strengthen our cultural, economic, and people-to-people connections, marking a new chapter in India-France relations,” he said.

A Rare Gesture of Warmth and Cooperation

The joint inauguration by the Indian Prime Minister and the French President underscores the strong personal rapport between the two leaders. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the event as “a reflection of the deep trust and remarkable confidence between Modi and Macron.”

The leaders also visited the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) facility in Cadarache, where India is one of seven partner countries contributing to research in fusion energy. Over 200 Indian scientists and industry players are actively engaged in the initiative.

A Vision for the Future

PM Modi’s three-day visit to France included co-chairing the AI Action Summit in Paris and strengthening collaborations in defense, nuclear energy, and artificial intelligence. Both nations also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and supporting economic growth in third countries through triangular development projects.

As PM Modi departed from Marseille, President Macron personally escorted him to the airport, further highlighting the warmth and depth of the bilateral relationship.

India’s Rising Global Stature

The inauguration of the Indian Consulate in Marseille signifies more than just diplomatic expansion; it reflects India’s increasing influence on the global stage. By honoring shared history and paving the way for future collaboration, India is emerging as a key player in shaping international partnerships.

With its unwavering focus on innovation, sustainability, and global cooperation, India is no longer just a participant in world affairs but a driving force in shaping them.
