February 14, 2025 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, making it clear that New Delhi is not neutral but firmly on the side of dialogue and diplomacy. Speaking alongside U.S. President Donald Trump during a joint press conference, Modi stressed the need for negotiated settlements rather than battlefield confrontations.
Since the war began, India has maintained active communication with both Moscow and Kyiv. PM Modi reiterated that he has remained in direct contact with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, consistently advocating for a peaceful resolution.
“Many believe India is neutral, but let me be clear—India is on the side of peace. This is not the era of war,” Modi emphasized.
His remarks echo his previous appeal to President Putin in 2022, when he urged that military conflicts must be replaced with diplomatic efforts.
PM Modi also praised President Trump’s diplomatic push, welcoming Washington’s renewed efforts to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. Trump’s administration has been engaged in backchannel diplomacy, with key officials like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Michael Waltz working to broker a peace settlement.
“I support and welcome President Trump’s initiatives. I hope he succeeds in bringing both parties together soon,” Modi stated.
However, the path to peace remains highly complex. While Russia demands recognition of its annexations, Ukraine insists on the restoration of its 2014 borders. Trump’s efforts, therefore, face significant diplomatic hurdles.
India has continued its strong economic ties with Russia, despite Western pressure. Notably, India has not joined U.S.-led sanctions against Moscow and has increased imports of Russian oil, reaching a record $54 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year.
At the same time, New Delhi has maintained an open dialogue with Ukraine, with PM Modi engaging with Zelenskyy at global summits like the G7 and BRICS. India’s balanced approach has positioned it as a potential mediator in the ongoing conflict.
As the war enters its third year, diplomatic solutions are more critical than ever. Modi’s firm stance on peace without alignment to any bloc reinforces India’s vision of global stability through dialogue.
By advocating for negotiations and welcoming U.S. efforts, India continues to strengthen its role as a key player in global conflict resolution. With renewed diplomatic momentum, all eyes are now on whether these efforts will lead to de-escalation or further geopolitical tensions.
