Manipur Government Urges Vigilance Against Misinformation Amid Political Crisis
Imphal, Manipur, February 11, 2025 – The Manipur government has called on citizens to remain alert against misinformation and unverified news that could incite unrest and disturb the state’s fragile peace. This warning follows the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, raising concerns about governance and stability.
Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh issued an official statement cautioning that certain individuals and groups may be spreading false narratives to create fear and discord. He stressed that misleading information has been widely circulated across multiple platforms, leading to confusion and unrest.
“Such attempts are intended to create lawlessness, and the public is strongly advised not to heed such misinformation or incitement,” the statement read. The government assured strict legal action against those attempting to incite violence or disrupt communal harmony.
To combat fake news, a 24-hour control room has been set up at 9485280419, where citizens can verify news before sharing it.
The Manipur government has urged community leaders, civil society organizations, student groups, religious figures, and intellectuals to work collectively in restoring trust and stability.
Singh emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, stating, “Let us come together to foster unity and rebuild trust among all communities for the betterment of our state.”
In a separate move to address security concerns, the government has established an Integrated Anti-Extortion Cell under the Home Department. This unit will include representatives from the State Police, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Assam Rifles, and the Army, focusing on tackling illegal extortion affecting civilians, government employees, and contractors.
Manipur’s political crisis has intensified following the resignation of N. Biren Singh, with uncertainty surrounding the delay in convening the Legislative Assembly. Opposition parties, particularly the Congress, have raised concerns over the government’s failure to summon the Assembly within the constitutionally mandated six-month period under Article 174(1) of the Indian Constitution.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the delay, calling it a constitutional violation and accusing the BJP-led government of stalling proceedings due to internal conflicts. “The session was declared null and void because the BJP could not appoint a successor to the chief minister, against whom the Congress was set to move a no-confidence motion,” Ramesh said.
Manipur has witnessed ethnic violence since May 2023, marked by clashes between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and Kuki-Zo groups from the hill districts. The conflict has resulted in over 250 deaths and the displacement of thousands, further worsening the volatile situation.
The government continues to stress the need for restraint and cooperation, urging all stakeholders to work towards peace and stability. However, with growing tensions, political uncertainty, and security concerns, the path to reconciliation remains unclear.
