Tensions Escalate Along LoC as Indian Army Retaliates to Pakistani Firing
Cross-Border Exchange in Poonch Sector Amid Rising Infiltration Threats
New Delhi, February 16, 2025: In a fresh flare-up along the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Army retaliated against cross-border firing initiated by Pakistani troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch sector on Sunday. The exchange, which occurred around 11 AM, saw Indian forces responding with precision fire, ensuring no casualties or damage on their side, security officials confirmed.
Cross-Border Skirmish in Poonch Sector
According to official sources, Pakistani troops fired approximately 18 rounds of small arms from a forward defense location (FDL) at Nakkarkot, manned by the 24 AK Battalion under the Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) Brigade in Rawalakot. The targeted Indian Army post, situated in the Gulpur sector and manned by the 5 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JKLI) under the 93 Infantry Brigade, responded with around 60 rounds of retaliatory fire.
While no injuries were reported, heightened surveillance has been maintained along the border region in light of recent security concerns. Officials noted that it remains unclear whether the firing was carried out solely by the Pakistan Army or if it involved militants attempting to infiltrate under the cover of gunfire.
Growing Security Challenges Along the LoC
Sunday’s incident follows a series of cross-border violations and infiltration attempts in Jammu and Kashmir in recent weeks. Earlier this month, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast near the LoC claimed the lives of two Indian soldiers, including a Captain, while two others sustained injuries in separate ceasefire violations. Indian forces, in response, launched strong retaliatory action, reportedly inflicting “heavy casualties” on the Pakistani side.
In another incident on February 8, terrorists opened fire on an Indian Army patrol in the Keri sector of Rajouri, prompting an immediate counteroffensive. Meanwhile, a landmine explosion in Krishna Ghati sector on the night of February 4-5 caused casualties among terrorists attempting to cross into Indian territory, although official figures remain unconfirmed.
Security agencies estimate that of the 70-80 Pakistani terrorists currently active in Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 55-60 are operating in the Jammu region. These militants, often working in small, highly trained groups, are equipped with advanced weaponry, including M4 carbines, and utilize modern technologies such as iridium satellite phones and thermal imaging.
Government Cracks Down on Terror Links
Amid escalating tensions, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has intensified its crackdown on individuals suspected of aiding terrorist networks. On Saturday, three government employees—including a police constable, a teacher, and a forest department orderly—were dismissed under orders from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for their alleged involvement in terror-related activities. Officials revealed that the accused were responsible for arranging weapons, identifying targets for attacks, and inciting violent protests, all under the directives of handlers based in Pakistan and PoJK.
Strategic and Diplomatic Implications
The renewed hostilities along the LoC pose a significant challenge to the ceasefire agreement reaffirmed between India and Pakistan in February 2021. While border violations have reduced since the agreement’s renewal, recent incidents underscore persistent security threats in the region.
India’s strategic response remains focused on neutralizing threats while maintaining operational readiness along the LoC. Experts suggest that continued ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts could further strain diplomatic efforts between the two nations.
