Indian-American Kash Patel Sworn in as FBI Director, Pledges Accountability and Justice
Historic Moment as Gujarat-Origin Leader Takes Oath on Bhagavad Gita

Washington D.C., February 23, 2025 – Kash Patel, an Indian-American with a distinguished background in national security and law enforcement, has been sworn in as the ninth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In a deeply symbolic gesture, Patel took his oath on the Bhagavad Gita, honoring his Indian heritage as he assumed leadership of the world’s most powerful investigative agency.

The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and administered by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. Patel’s family and girlfriend stood beside him, with other relatives seated in the front row, marking a historic moment for the Indian-American community.

‘Living the American Dream’

After taking the oath, Patel called his appointment a powerful testament to the American Dream.

“Anyone who thinks the American Dream is dead, look right here. You’re talking to a first-generation Indian who is about to lead the law enforcement agency of the greatest nation on earth. That can’t happen anywhere else,” Patel declared.

He vowed to prioritize transparency, integrity, and accountability during his tenure. “I promise that there will be accountability within the FBI and outside of it,” he assured.

Trump’s Endorsement and Political Backing

U.S. President Donald Trump, a strong advocate for Patel’s leadership, praised him as “tough” and “strong.”

“One of the reasons I love Kash and wanted to put him in is because of the respect the agents have for him. He will go down as the best ever at that position,” Trump stated.

Trump also highlighted that Patel’s confirmation process, despite initial opposition, was ultimately swift and decisive. He credited Republican leaders like former Congressman Trey Gowdy for endorsing Patel, solidifying his path to confirmation.

The White House, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), welcomed Patel’s appointment as a key step in fulfilling the administration’s vision of restoring integrity to federal law enforcement.

“Director Kash Patel’s confirmation marks a crucial step in executing the administration’s agenda to restore integrity and uphold the rule of law. The FBI will now refocus on its core mission: enforcing justice fairly and without bias,” the statement read.

A Contentious Confirmation Battle

Despite strong Republican backing, Patel’s nomination faced opposition from Senate Democrats and moderate Republicans Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine). However, Patel secured confirmation in a narrow 51-49 Senate vote, aided by the support of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had previously opposed several Trump nominees.

Following his confirmation, Patel expressed gratitude to President Trump and Attorney General Bondi for their trust and support, reaffirming his commitment to transforming the FBI into an efficient and transparent institution.

Honoring Indian Heritage on a Global Stage

Patel’s deep-rooted Indian values were evident throughout the ceremony. His uncle, Krishnakant Patel, from Bhadran village in Gujarat, India, expressed immense pride in his nephew’s achievement.

“Taking the oath on the Bhagavad Gita shows that he will always keep his Indian culture alive, even while serving in such a high office in America,” said Patel’s uncle.

Patel has long embraced his cultural heritage—he frequently greets people with ‘Jai Shri Krishna’ and honored his parents by touching their feet before addressing the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearing.

From Gujarat to the FBI’s Top Office

Born to Indian immigrant parents, Patel’s family had migrated from Gujarat to Uganda before fleeing Idi Amin’s brutal regime. They later settled in Canada before finally making their home in New York, where Patel was born.

A graduate of the University of Richmond and later a law scholar at the University College London, Patel built a distinguished career in law enforcement, intelligence, and national security. His rapid ascent to the top position in the FBI highlights the growing influence of Indian-Americans in global leadership roles.

A New Era for the FBI

As Patel assumes office, he faces the challenge of rebuilding trust in the FBI, which has been at the center of political controversies in recent years. His vision for an accountable, transparent, and unbiased FBI aligns with Trump’s broader law enforcement policies, signaling a major shift in the agency’s leadership and priorities.

With Patel at the helm, Indian-Americans continue to make significant contributions on the world stage, further solidifying India’s growing influence in global governance.
