As per the latest scheme of the Indian government, the recruitment process in the Indian army will only be done through Agneepath Scheme. A huge portion of the Indian army holds Nepal domicile Gorkhas out of which 60% belongs to the Nepal domicile and 40% to the Indian domicile.

However, in the recent past Kumaoni and garhwal gorkhas have been appointed in the place of Indian domicile gorkhas.

Will the Agneepath Scheme be beneficial for the Nepal domicile Gorkhas?

There’s a saying, if a man states that he is not afraid of death then either he is lying or he is a Gorkha.

The Gorkha regiment holds a chapter named bravery in the 200 years history of Indian army. They have been a part of Indian freedom movement and also have been serving the Indian army since the independence time.

So, according to the Agneepath Scheme, any candidate appointed in the Indian army will be given a 4 years service slot and out of them 25% will be selected as permanent members of the Indian army.

As per the service norms, after retiring from the 4 years service, candidates will receive an amount of INR 11.7 lakhs.

Retired Major General, Binoj Basnet states that, Nepali Gorkhas join the Indian army because of the following reasons –

  • A respect in the society
  • A tradition to maintain
  • And an opportunity to join Indian army and serve the country

All the above interests stays intact after the implementation of the Agneepath Scheme. He aso states that inflation has risen up during and after the covid situation. Hence, joblessness has stricken the youth to its height. So, youth should not loose this opportunity as they will also get another chance to be permanent in the Indian army.

Experts also mentions that, this Agneepath Scheme is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Nepali Grokhas as they will have 17-18 lakhs (in Nepali currency) while they retire and come back home. That too at the age of 25-26. This is a foreign employment scheme for Nepali Gorkhas who generally visit foreign countries to work there for 4-5 years only.

So, at the end of the service in Indian army through Agneepath scheme, they will have 17-18 lakhs Nepali rupees which they can invest in SME business. Apart from that, they can also get a job in the banking or industrial security. A lot of Nepali Gorkhas join Dubai and Singapore police. This service of 4 years in the Indian army will help them get a better opportunity as well.
