“Plantation Drive Held to Commemorate Coronation Anniversary of His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuk, the Fourth King of Bhutan”

On June 2, 2023, in Jaigaon, a town on the Indo-Bhutan border, a unique plantation drive was organized to combat soil erosion and promote environmental sustainability. The initiative aimed to commemorate the coronation anniversary of the fourth King of Bhutan.

The Indo-Bhutan region, particularly near Border Pillar 70 (Below Kharbandi Palace) has been grappling with the issue of soil erosion, which worsens during the rainy seasons. Recognizing the importance of addressing this problem, officials from the Phuentsholing Dungkhag administration, foresters, and dedicated volunteers known as Desuups from Bhutan joined hands with Marwari Yuva Manch and authorities from Jaigaon.

The collaborative effort saw active participation from Marwari Yuva Manch-Jaigaon, officials from the Jaigaon Police Station, Jaigaon Land & Customs, and other stakeholders. Together, they worked tirelessly to make this plantation drive a resounding success.

The event kicked off with an opening remark by Dasho Dungpa Karma Jurmi (Phuentsholing, Bhutan), who highlighted the significance of this initiative in preserving the environment and fostering a harmonious relationship between the two neighboring nations. This was followed by Dasho Uttar Kumar Rai, Thrompon (Mayor) of Phuentsholing, Bhutan. A traditional offering of khadar was made to symbolize respect and gratitude towards the Indian officials.

Indian authorities Ganga Prasad Sharma, Chairman of Jaigaon Development Authority, TW Bhutia, Superintendent of Jaigaon Land and Customs, and Prabir Dutta, O/C of Jaigaon Police Station were present.

To keep the participants energized and motivated throughout the day, refreshments were provided. Volunteers and officials then proceeded to the designated areas for plantation. With shovels in hand and determination in their hearts, they planted a variety of native trees and plants, carefully chosen to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion in the region.

This plantation drive at the Indo-Bhutan border town of Jaigaon and Phuentsholing marks a significant milestone as it is the first of its kind in the area. The collaborative effort between Bhutanese officials, local organizations, and Indian authorities demonstrates the commitment of both nations to preserving their shared environment.

The plantation drive aims not only to combat soil erosion but also to create a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come. By joining hands across borders, the participants showcased the power of unity and collective action in addressing environmental challenges.

As the plantation drive concluded, the participants expressed their satisfaction with the accomplishments of the day. They expressed hope that this endeavor would serve as a catalyst for similar initiatives in the future, encouraging more people to take an active role in safeguarding the environment.

With the successful completion of the plantation drive, the Indo-Bhutan region takes a step closer to mitigating the adverse effects of soil erosion and embracing a greener and healthier future. The spirit of collaboration and dedication demonstrated during this event serves as a beacon of inspiration for environmental conservation efforts in the region.

President of Marwari Yuva Manch, Jaigaon Prasant Agarwal said “On behalf of MYM, I extend my gratitude to all the participants, volunteers, Indian & Bhutanese officials, and stakeholders who dedicated their time and efforts to make this plantation drive a resounding success. Your hard work and unwavering determination have undoubtedly made a significant impact on the environment and the community.”

Approximately 100 participants from Jaigaon and Phuentsholing took part in this drive. The plantation drive started at 08:30 am and concluded around 01:00 pm after lunch.

This initiative is yet another step towards strengthening Indo-Bhutan relationships.
